“Humility, care and an accessible attention”
Nearness is being capable of treating others personally, with care and kindness, eschewing, as far as possible, distance, barriers and protocols which hinder it. It is also meant to minimize the feeling produced by physical distance. Taking an interest, smiling, actively listening, being polite, transparent, thankful, open and so forth can be some of the keys to having the others feel us near, however far we might be. Nearness has the added value of humility, with which human beings show simplicity and equality when uttering words, gestures of courtesy, affection and care, no matter the social constraints. It is true that sometimes it is extremely tough to get this value across as effectively as we could. Lack of time, moods, and other circumstances can condition us. Clearly, the key to maintain this attitude is to understand that most people enjoy warmth, just like we do. It is a marvellous reciprocity, which humanizes us and generates a more authentic communion among people.
